The capital, Chora, is much different than the other capitals of the Aegean islands, it is a colourful port where small fishing boats are moored next to luxurious boats. White houses built close to one another or on top of each other, churches and small stores and restaurants are all crammed in the narrow streets.

Venetia in Mykonos
In the Castle, we find Virgin Mary Paraportiani, a unique Byzantine monument with arched bell tower. Still in the capital there are the Panachrantou church, the Aghia Kiriaki church and the Aghia Eleni church. The island has more than 700 churches with wooden sculptured temples, manufactured by mariners before long journeys.

In Chora, you can find three Museums, the Archaeological Museum, the Folk's Art Museum at the Castle and the Nautical Museum. One of the most wonderful spots is Venetia, with the houses of captains built on the rock and hanging above the sea. The image is complete with the windmills at the eastern side of the Castle, where the ancient Acropolis was found. In Ano Mera, 8 klm from Chora, we can find the Panagia Tourliani Monastery.

The Lion in Delos
Delos

Selected by Ancient Greeks as a religious centre, the small island gradually became a cultural and trade centre full of temples, markets and stadiums. Later, as centuries passed, the island fell into decay and finally it was destroyed by wars. Today the island is an open air museum with fallen columns from temples, mosaics, a stadium, part of the ancient theatre and marble lions that were the guards of the island.
